I'm in Vermont now -- only 7 hours from Baltimore! A nice, short drive in comparison. Also, Tom is willing to stop for bathroom breaks, unlike Nathaniel. :D

Here are some photos of the Alaska to Baltimore trip, Day One:

6.5 days, lots of hours and one oil change later, we're done!

Well, Nathaniel is completely done -- I'll be driving from Baltimore to Bennington on the 4th, which is another 6.5 hours or so, but it'll seem like small change after making it this far. According to MapQuest, the drive from my house to Tom's (where I am right now, and have been since midnight-thirty on Tuesday morning) is 4317.13 miles. Of course, it was rather longer than that, seeing as got a few little run arounds in Bemidji and Chicago, and the fact that we went through Chicago at all.

Pittsburgh was probably the least fun of the driving experiance, at least as a passanger. It was absolutely pitch black, pouring rain - complete with thunder and lightning - and Nathaniel is a very intent driver who does NOT like to wait behind other cars if at all possible. Which resulted in a lot of passing of big trucks in the dark and wet. Little freaky, but he knows how to handle that Civic, so it was okay.

I DO have photos, though not as many as I might like, and they'll be posted eventually. Most likely when I get back to school. And, yes, while I have neglected to mention Jackson (my sock puppet) there is evidence that he was along with us. Including a photo of him and the most perfect licence plate I have ever seen.

So, it was a fun experiance, aside from the infrequent bathroom breaks. Nathaniel and I managed to get along, and to get through three books on tape. We discovered, on the last day, that I had accidentally grabbed "Order of the Phoenix" instead of "Goblet of Fire", otherwise we would have put a very large dent in four.

Anything else? Not really.... Stay tuned for Vermont trip "excitement" and photos!

P.S. I have NO idea why there was a leaning tower of Chicago. We were driving to Mike's place and all of a sudden, in a car lot, I think, we spotted a Piza-look-alike. I, unfortunately, didn't whip out the camera in time.

We've arrived in time to witness a beautiful sunset over Whitehorse, after about 13 hours of driving. We managed to get through all of the first Harry Potter book on tape plus have plenty of left over time for "bonding". Nathaniel drove the entire way -- a good thing, considering that I nodded off several times.

I have internet access because tonight is not a camping night: we're staying with a friend of Nathaniel's that he met through snowshoeing. How appropriately northern of us.

When I started typing, I thought that perhaps there were interesting things to be said, but I seem to have forgotten all of them. Aside from the odd couple in the middle-of-nowhere gas station telling us that there was a hurricane warning (...?), we didn't have a lot of human interaction and the sights were pretty much beautiful mountains, snow, beautiful lakes, short trees and some more beautiful things of various nature.

I need sleep now. G'night.

Our house was decended upon this evening. Several waves of people came and went, wishing us good travels, dropping off cookies, picking up sewing comissions and just generally visiting for one last time before the winter holidays.

This, of course, means that I am still not packed. Well, not completely. I also, as with every time I try to pack, realize that I have TOO MUCH CLOTHING. The problem is, of course, that I wear all of it. How can I choose between them? I am cutting back on socks, which you should all admire. Anything less than 60 pairs is a record. One is being recycled as a snake, but he doesn't count as a sock - he is a friend.

Okay -- off to REALLY finish this time! We leave at 07:00 Alaska Time in the morning and we hope to get to Whitehorse by tomorrow evening. Hellllo, Canada!

Also: here's a plug to the AYEA blog, which is currently under the care of my younger brother Bart, who is off in Russia for an enviromental conference. More Grabman-family travel updates!

It is early on Sunday morning - about two o'clock in the morning, Alaska time.

We leave at some time in the wee hours of Monday morning.

Tomorrow we will be making a Costco run to stock up on supplies.

I have yet to pack a single thing.

I also have yet to properly learn to drive stick.

If all goes well, this journal should be updated with phone posts and, when internet access is made possible, photos.

Things I Plan To Do On The Trip:
Listen to Harry Potter on tape (as Nathaniel has never read any of them)
Draw
Read
Chronicle
Listen to music
Do my share of driving
Nap
Sit
Sit some more
Insist on taking a stretch break
Play with my sock puppet
Count trees
Make friends in traffic
Keep on sitting

Join me to see how many of these goals I can accomplish in two weeks!
